Remain
Living in connection with Jesus
John 15:4-5 (NLT)
Be Still
Scripture
“Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.
“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.”
John 15:4–5 NLT
Reflection
Jesus described our relationship with Him using the picture of a vine and its branches. A branch does not struggle to produce life on its own. It receives everything it needs by remaining connected to the vine.
In the same way, Jesus does not invite us to visit Him only when life becomes difficult or when we need an answer. He invites us to remain—to live each ordinary day in an ongoing relationship with Him.
Remaining does not mean thinking about God every moment or always feeling especially close to Him. It means returning our attention to Jesus again and again—bringing Him our questions, receiving His words, trusting His love, and allowing His Spirit to shape the way we live. We remain not to earn His love, but because He has already welcomed us into it. As we stay close to Him, His life bears fruit in ours—often quietly, gradually, and in ways we may not notice at first.
Prayer
Jesus, thank You for inviting me to remain close to You. When I become distracted or try to live in my own strength, gently draw my attention back to You. Help me receive Your words, trust Your love, and follow Your Spirit through the ordinary moments of this week. Let Your life bear fruit in mine. Amen.
Conversation
What might it look like for us to remain connected to Jesus during an ordinary day?
Share with a spouse, child, friend, neighbor, or small group—or simply ponder it on your own.
This Week’s Next Step
Choose one ordinary moment to reconnect with Jesus.
As a family—or on your own—choose a moment that already occurs regularly. When that moment comes, pause briefly and pray: Jesus, help us remain close to You.
There is no need to add a complicated new routine. Simply allow something already present in your day to become a gentle reminder that Jesus is with you and His life is at work within you.
Journal Reflection
Where do I sense the life of Jesus quietly growing something new in me?
May you discover that remaining with Jesus is not another task to complete, but a life of receiving all that He lovingly provides.
